The Swings at San Martin Park - Hateful Julie The chains, they clink with the shuffle of my behind scooting back and pushing off of the sand This one is one of the riskier kind that pinches the finger skin on my hand I pump my legs and swing into the air I see the giant metal slide that burns my hide on hot summer days. And at the bottom of the silver stairs is where the boy fell from the top and died The slide was taken from its place in the sand and replaced with plastic playground: 14 grand with 13-inch galvanized steel tubes heavy-duty components and reinforced concrete screws This tiny children's city - colorful, austere, composed emanating safety in the most conscientious of ways and years from now when we're all dead and decomposed the playground will still remain for endless days I jump and launch and try to reach the spot where there was blood and similarly, my feet... they anchored it down tight assembled on safe rubber squares over the site the spot where there was blood but now the dullness hides the boy's soft thud
